As our guest, we would love for you to immerse yourself in the Indian culture. If you were in India you would be expected to wear Indian attire, and we are actively encouraging you to do so! Lehenga's and sari's are the most common options for those who wish to be femme-presenting at the wedding, A lehenga is a two-piece outfit that includes a top (usually cropped) with a full, high-waisted skirt. A sari is a long piece of fabric, often made of silk, that's used to wrap around the body. Those that wish to be presenting as men are encouraged to wear a sherwani, which is a long coat-like top. Also, please do feel free to experiment with the colours, clothing to see what works best for you! We would love you to dress as bright as possible, but colours to avoid are; red, gold, black and white. You can go into the following stores to purchase your attire: 1. O'NITAA 2. Prachy Creations 3. Aashni & Co 4. Bollywood Borrowed 5. Amrika 6. Krishna Sarees If all else fails - ASOS now have some options!
A traditional Indian wedding can last up to five days, but most last for three days. However, we understand that people have lives, so we have shortened ours down to two key days. (You shouldn't have to take time off to be able to attend - if you have to, we appreciate it greatly!) The ceremony can traditionally last up to seven hours, however, ours will last just one.
A pithi is similar to haldi ceremony in which a paste of sandalwood, turmeric, saffron, rosewater and perfume is applied to the couple by friends and family at their respective homes. The turmeric included in the paste is considered auspicious and also a beauty enhancer. For those that are invited we advise you to wear white, but not clothes that you care about as they may get turmeric over that (and that can be a pretty tough stain to remove!)
A Mehndi party is a pre-wedding event for the bride and their closest friends and family members. The main focus of the event is the application of the bridal mehndi, or henna design, to their hands and feet. Mehndi, also known as henna, is a dye made from Lawsonia inermis, the henna plant. For thousands of years, mehndi has been used as a form of body art. This is why the mehndi party is often held before the wedding—to beautify and bless the bride before their big day. In the Hindu tradition, mehndi is part of the Solah Shringar, or sixteen bridal adornments, which is a ritual for the beautification of the bride from head to toe at the time of their wedding.
The pithi will be followed by a mehndi evening for those who are femme presenting. But we are inclusive so everybody, please don’t be afraid to have henna/mehndi designed on your hands too!
