Our story begins at a place far beyond my comfort zone – a dance floor. I first met Alex at a Sooners Scandals practice in March of 2017. Sooner Scandals is a competition in which a sorority and fraternity join forces to perform a Broadway-style show. I was nervous heading into the first practice as my singing or dancing experience had stretched no further than the safety of my own shower. Nevertheless, I found myself at the Gamma Phi Beta house as a freshman who was encouraged to help the fraternity out and join the Scandals cast. To my great fortune, I was paired with Alex in our show’s first dance. It was during this time, that we first got to know each other. I can still feel my palms sweating and heart soaring after getting Alex to crack a smile, even if it was directed at my dancing skills (or lack thereof). It didn’t take long for me to start crushing. I was immediately attracted to her fun-loving energy and her infectious smile. However, Alex was in a relationship at the time, so I had to settle for just being friends. The time we spent during Sooner Scandals laid the groundwork for our relationship, albeit a friendship at the time. Following the conclusion of Scandals, Alex and I remained friends but headed our separate directions as we went home for the summer. The following semester we took a couple of classes together in which we took turns sneaking glances at one another from across the lecture hall. I still remember gazing at her from across the room and dreaming of what a relationship with her would look like. Eventually, I was able to get her phone number by going to office hours with her after class and asking her to send me a picture of her notes. However, it wasn’t until the spring semester where our relationship would break through the friendship barrier for the first time. Once again, Sooner Scandals would serve as the catalyst for my chance to get closer with Alex. Although we were not on the same cast this year, the occurrence of Scandals provided the perfect opportunity for me to spark natural conversation with her. By the grace of God, our shows performed back-to-back, so Alex and I would see each other backstage before our casts went out to perform. I loved getting to see her in her element, encourage her, and make her smile before going on stage. Those back-stage moments shared together led to texting conversations of dissecting our thoughts on each show. Those texting conversations led to continued conversations after Scandals until I finally mustered up the courage to ask her on a date. At our first date, Alex and I had an immediate connection that would only grow in abundance as we began to take on life together. During the remainder of our time at OU we went on to make memories of a lifetime: taking road trips to watch OU football games, attending date parties together, playing cards at the Mont, and everything in between. We even took on the challenge of long-distance as Alex studied abroad for a semester in Italy. Through it all, we fell in love and wholeheartedly knew that no matter where life took us, it was going to include each other as one another’s life partner. Following graduation, we moved to Dallas to start our careers and plant our “adulting” roots. We encouraged and loved one another through challenging seasons of life as I began law school and Alex began working at Deloitte. We got plugged into Northway Church, where we have found a church family that pushes us closer to Jesus. We deeply longed for marriage but were patiently adhering to the timeline in which we felt like the Lord had called us to. The long-awaited moment of embarking on our journey to marriage came to fruition on July 30th, 2022 when I asked Alex to be my forever. As we head into marriage, Alex and I are surrounded with love. If you are reading this, we deeply appreciate the impact you have had on either and/or both of our lives, and we thank God for the community He has blessed us with. Here’s to forever!
