We met September 2011 during our senior year of high school in physics class. We became fast friends and shared lunch together every day, but stayed strictly in the friend-zone. We went our separate ways for college - Kaitlyn to Penn State and Alex to Bloomsburg. We would randomly reconnect over the phone, often late-night after a few drinks as "friends". Hindsight is 20/20, right? Sometime in September 2017, we randomly reconnected discussing the first game of the Penn State Football season. Kaitlyn had just moved to her tin 4th floor walk-up in Philadelphia, and Alex was living in Allentown at the time. We decided to actually meet up again after all these years, and the week and a half between the reconnection and Alex's visit, we spoke on the phone every single day. Upon spending time together in person after years of not seeing each other, this time was different, and we knew we couldn't just stay friends any longer.
We decided to visit Alex's friend's mountain house in the Adirondacks in Upstate NY with our friends Courtney, Sara, and Collin. We had a blast that first day, hanging out on the dock, grilling, enjoying the peace of the lake down the street. That night Alex asked Kaitlyn to take a walk down to the dock to look at the stars. He always said that the view stars up in the mountains was the clearest he's ever seen and was dying to show her. Well don't you know, it was overcast that night and there was not a single star to be seen. Nonetheless, we took a walk down to the dock (in the pitch black) and sat and talked for a few minutes. As we began walking back to the house, Alex got down on one knee and asked Kaitlyn to marry him. The funny part is, she couldn't even see him, it was THAT dark out. She said yes (after crying for a solid minute or so) and our friends popped out of the dark to take pictures, hand us celebratory White Claws (because what else would we celebrate with?), and we went to the conveniently-located bar on the same street and mingled with the locals (some interesting characters as you can imagine), popped champagne, and celebrated!
