“Shelby Phillips impressed me from the start. Before reaching out to her via email in the summer of 2018, I took some time to learn about her. From her personal blog, I learned that she is a graduate of NYU, that she loves photographing horses, that she is also an actor and a writer, and that she has a passion for bringing moments to life through photography. From looking at her curated selection of photographs on her website, I quickly learned that she cares about the minor gestures, the subtleties of a moment, and the play of light. At the time I found her (in 2018), I believe wedding photography was not her main focus; it seemed that she photographed more four-legged animals than did two-legged ones. I personally did not mind this one bit; rather, I found her versatility as a photographer to be a source of strength. If she could capture emotion and beauty without outward displays of emotions and beauty, then that speaks to her craft as an artist. I found her gentle and personal touch to photography to resonate deeply with me, and I also appreciated how she wrote about her life experiences in her blog. Here was a passionate young woman who not only observes the world with her eyes, but also attunes to it with her heart fully open. I opted for an impractically long train for my wedding dress (I’m old-fashioned at heart!) so my younger sister dedicatedly carried it as I walked ahead of her. There were many stares from strangers along the way, but honestly, I did not pay attention because I was so focused on taking small steps so that I would not trip, or worse, get my heels stuck between the cracks in the sidewalk. It was past 5pm and the sun was blazing hot, but because we were situated right by the water, there was an occasional gentle breeze. Shelby was particularly excited about the wind, because it paved the way for some truly magnificent “action shots.” As I slowly made my way to the venue with my sister directly behind me, and my mother and soon-to-be mother-in-law next to us, Shelby was quick on her feet, capturing the magic in the small moments, while playing with the light. As I look back on the photographs that she took of that day, I am amazed by how she chased the light throughout the day and into the evening, how she beautifully brought life into still photographs, and how she managed to capture all our family and friends in a way that reflects each person’s personality. Today, when I visit Shelby’s website, I immediately notice that it has grown substantially. Since I signed my wedding photography contract, Shelby has taken on many other weddings, bringing life to a blank canvas by means of her camera lens, coupled with her eye for precious moments. “I'm not even sure where to begin! We met Emily in 2022, when my now husband and I got engaged in the Outer Banks. Leading up to our engagement shoot, we were both anxious expecting to feel uncomfortable and out of place in front of a professional camera lens for the first time. After meeting Emily, that awkwardness lasted about 2 minutes flat, and soon found ourselves not only feeling comfortable, but truly having a blast with it. Between changing locations, we grabbed coffee and bagels where we spent time chatting and getting to know Emily, discovering many similarities between our families, talking about our dogs and so much more. While shooting at our second location, a gorgeous botanical garden none of us had ever been to, it truly felt as if we were just there to explore and that Emily was our childhood friend who happened to just have a camera with her taking photos and not at all that we had just met her earlier that morning. By the end of our day together, before even seeing a single photo from our shoot, we were already discussing flying her out to NY to shoot our wedding and months later, the minute we decided on a date, we hired Emily again. Working with Emily to plan our photography portion of the wedding was truly the easiest part of the entire wedding planning process for us. She was extremely helpful and organized, asking questions, giving suggestions and creating a detailed timeline based on what was important to us, but what stood out the most was that she was genuinely passionate about making the day as enjoyable for us as possible. She showed us this by going above and beyond in ways such as offering help and resources completely unrelated to photography, doing her own research, creating polls on her social media platforms to help answer our questions, reaching out to her own personal contacts, sending helpful questionnaires, answering late night texts and emails and beyond. Our calls with her always put me at ease during such a hectic time and turned my anxiety into excitement. Leading up to our wedding, Emily continued to often reach out just to simply check on us and see if she could offer a helping hand (beyond the million ways she already had) which stood out immensely to us. The day of our wedding, having Emily with us was truly like having a lifelong friend there to get ready together. Something so special about her is the way she has mastered the balance between bringing a presence of excitement and a sense of calming to the day. She is able to get the photos necessary without an overbearing energy which many of our friends and family observed as well, mentioning how they wish their own wedding photographers were more like her. We received much praise from our families and friends but also our other vendors as well, for how well she worked with them and how kind and easy it was to spend the day with her. She was not just our photographer, she was a pillar of our day. When you hire Emily, you are really hiring a passionate, down to earth, genuine and professional person who happens to also be an incredibly talented photographer. “TLDR: I could not have picked a better photographer and I truly believe that Annie would be perfect for absolutely anyone. Her energy is infectious in a way that really brings up your excitement levels but also keeps your anxiety down. My husband is very introverted and was really worried about photos, but she kept him comfortable and in his element in a way I truly don’t believe anyone else would have. As for myself, I felt beautiful and gorgeous the entire time because of her and her partner. For the work she did and the amount of effort she puts into our photos, I believe her prices are incredibly fair. If anything, she’s undercutting herself. I will absolutely be recommending Annie to anyone and everyone. Now for the longer part of the review! We got married on May 30th, 2024 and we were doing our wedding a little differently. Instead of doing private vows or doing our vows at the ceremony, we did our vows at our rehearsal dinner. That is also when we allowed friends and family to come up and say something. The reason we did this route is because my husband is introverted and not a public speaker while I am the complete opposite. He also really wanted to see my walk down the aisle as our first look instead of a private look. Me, on the other hand, wanted at least our family and close friends to witness our vows. So we compromised! On top of it being two separate days, I was very adamant that I wanted two photographers along with wanting to capture the little things, such as my grandparents holding hands or our friends doing silly things at a table. I don’t mind staged photos, but I really wanted more natural focused shots. It was surprisingly difficult to find someone who was able to both days and within our price range. When we stumbled upon Annie, it felt like fate. She was so easy to figure things out with. Instead of an engagement photo session, she was happy to do our rehearsal dinner instead. She was there for any questions I had and the forms she had us fill out were super detailed! It really helped getting our thoughts together and deciding what was most important for our wedding. The day before the wedding, she vibed so well with everyone at the rehearsal dinner. She even got perfect photos of our dogs, who are honestly like our children. The day of the wedding, Annie and her second photographer (who I’ve completely blanked on the name, my fault for taking so long to write a review!) were amazing. Every single one of our friends had compliments for them and just LOVED their energy. Annie kept me calm and collected while the second was fully invested in my husband. I don’t think the wedding would have gone as smoothly without those two. The photos I received back? Better than I could ever dream of. Truly. They got beautiful shots of my grandparents dancing, my dad talking to one of his nephews, his mom talking with his brother. Just candid shots that looked real and natural. I am unbelievably so happy with Annie and the work she put in for us. Photographs are one of the most important things for me at our wedding and she truly blew it out of the park.We thank her for all her work from the bottom of our hearts and will always cherish the memories she gave us.”

I'm originally from East Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania but I've lived all over the country and have finally landed in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn. My personal hobbies include rock climbing, learning French, fine-tuning my espresso skills, and drinking the best wine I can get my hands on (yes, if you're getting married at a winery, I'm interested!). I've been photographing weddings since 2009 (that's 15 years!) and I'm still not even the least bit bored. Hell, I still cry at weddings on a regular basis. Staying emotional and in the moment is what allows me to capture the moments that matter most to my couples.
