The DuPage County Historical Museum is housed in what was formerly known as the Adams Memorial Library. The building was erected by John Quincy Adams (a distant relative of the Adams presidents) in 1891 to serve as a library and community center for Wheaton in memory of his late wife, Marilla Phipps Adams. In 1967, the building opened as the DuPage County Historical Museum under the operation of the County of DuPage and DuPage County Historical Society. It is the only institution dedicated to the collection, preservation, interpretation, and exhibition of materials which document the history of DuPage County.
