Growing up in Little Rock, Arkansas with a singing mother and a guitar playing father, Merlon and his nine siblings lived in a home filled with gospel music. Although Merlon did not have the gift to sing as many of his siblings did, he eventually found his voice on the saxophone. My love for photography started in my early youth when I would visit my grandmother during summer vacations. She had about 3 to 4 wonderful family albums. My favorite albums were the ones where I saw gramma's old pictures taken in the early 1900’s. I would ask who those people were and she would tell me while including the stories behind the photos. What kid doesn’t like stories? Those family albums rapidly connected me with our family's history and the stories brought the photos to life. My great grandmother has a face, not just a name.

When I was about 10 years old, my dad gave me a camera and I quickly became obsessed. My intrigue continued to grow over the years and I went on to earn my BA in Studio Art , Photography, from the University of Virginia. After graduating I worked as a portrait photographer and decided to pursue and earn my MFA in Imaging Arts from the Rochester Institute of Technology.
