Some love stories begin with perfect timing. Ours began with a pep talk, a pirate feather, and a promise to ourselves that we’d only stay for 30 minutes. On January 25, 2025, during Tampa’s Gasparilla weekend, our paths crossed at 7th + Grove in Ybor City. The restaurant had been reserved for “Alpharilla,” the annual celebration hosted by Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. As the NPHC Representative for my chapter, I had been invited to plenty of fraternity events before—but as a proud introvert, I always managed to find a reason not to go. That night was different. After convincing myself to finally show up “for networking purposes,” I reached out to a friend to see if she and her husband would be attending. When plans fell through, I almost stayed home too. But since I was already dressed, I made myself a deal: attend for at least 30 minutes, then reward myself with Cheesecake Factory and a cozy night cuddling my dog. I arrived to a lively Ybor City filled with music, laughter, and Gasparilla pirates roaming the streets. After greeting the event organizers, I grabbed a drink and settled at the bar, mentally counting down my remaining minutes. About 10 minutes in, Emeric walked in. He stepped into the empty spot beside me wearing a pirate hat so large it practically blocked the light above us. What really caught my attention, though, was the oversized yellow feather flowing from the top. Without thinking, I reached up and touched it before realizing I had fully invaded a stranger’s personal space. I laughed, apologized, and expected the moment to end there. Instead, a conversation began that neither of us wanted to end. What started as casual small talk turned into discussions about faith, purpose, personality, ambition, and life. Somewhere between the first drink and the second, we exchanged information to collaborate on future projects—only to realize we still hadn’t formally introduced ourselves yet. Eventually, we parted ways to enjoy the rest of the event. But by the time I circled the room once more, my original 30-minute commitment had long expired. So, true to my promise, I headed off to grab my Cheesecake Factory and call it a night. Later that evening, Emeric texted: “I’m not sure if you left, but talking to you was the highlight of my night.” Naturally, he had to wait until after church the next morning for a response. From the very beginning, Emeric led with kindness, consistency, and intention. There was never pressure—just peace. Our relationship grew through long conversations, shared values, and recaps from our separate Bible study groups. We even began reading The Sacred Search together after it became part of his study curriculum. Through every chapter, we discovered how aligned our beliefs, goals, and outlook on life truly were. Somewhere along the way, friendship became home. We bonded over shared Millennial experiences, our love for God, and our growing tradition of “Kidnapventures”—surprise date nights where one person planned the outing and the other simply had to “get in the car” with zero explanation. Naturally, it became an ongoing competition to see who could create the best adventure. Then came Valentine’s Day 2026. After a sentimental photo shoot at the St. Pete Pier—the same place where we first said “I love you”—Emeric asked forever of me, and I said yes. What began in a crowded room during Gasparilla became a story of intentional love, answered prayers, and two people choosing each other daily. A little divine timing, a little Black excellence, a little “if you know, you know”… and a whole lot of grace brought us here. Thank you for sharing in our story. Emeric: "What she said."
