Our Story

In Cantonese, Yuen Fuen (緣份) describes the connections and chance encounters that bring certain people into each other's lives. In Vietnamese, Duyên Nợ speaks to a bond that intertwines two people's paths in ways that feel almost impossible to explain. For Carol and Jordan, these ideas feel pretty fitting. It started at Centennial College in the summer of 2018. Carol was a nursing student working in the Varsity department, inside a glass-walled office that made it very easy to see exactly who was walking by. Jordan worked as a Personal Trainer upstairs in the gym. Every day, he'd find a reason to walk back and forth past that office, each time stopping to catch Carol's attention and say hello. There was only one small problem: Carol wore a ring on her right hand. Jordan, who at the time had not yet familiarized himself with which finger means what, spent the entire summer convinced she was married. So there he was, pacing back and forth past a glass office, saying hello to the girl he thought was married. As summer was ending, it finally occurred to Jordan to Google "wedding ring finger." He was very relieved to learn he had been wrong. Their official first date was October 25, 2018. By their second date, they already had a running bit: rating everything out of ten: how good something was, or how likely it was to happen. In December 2018 Jordan told Carol he wanted to marry her, and that he could tell she felt the same way. Carol's response, delivered in their shared rating language: 0.1/10. Jordan came right back with 0.1/0.1, meaning it was a 100% yes from him. (There is a screenshot. We will be framing it.) Seven years of choosing each other, every day. Cooking for each other, gym sessions, and being locked in together through COVID. Not every chapter stayed close to home. They explored beaches in Miami, the Bahamas, the Dominican Republic, and Jamaica; cities in Japan; Carol's roots in Vietnam and Jordan's in Hong Kong; east to Halifax and west to Vancouver & Calgary. Seven years in, Jordan took Carol to a field full of flowers in Vancouver, got down on one knee, and asked her to marry him. She said yes. (0.1/0.1) Maybe it was coincidence. Maybe it was Yuen Fuen. Maybe it was Duyên Nợ. Whatever it was, we can say for sure that we were the ones who chose to stay and build a life together. And we are so excited!! We're looking forward to building a family and filling our lives with many more meals, adventures, laughs, and memories.
