Getting There

Hotel

Relais Villa Giulia

Via di Villa Giulia, Villa Giulia, Marche 61032, Italy

Our venue, Relais Villa Giulia, is located about 3 miles from the town center of Fano. Fano is a small city on the east coast of Italy in the province of Pesaro and Urbano. The provincial-level cities of Ancona, Urbino, and Perugia are close by, but Bologna is the closest major city (connected by high speed rail and international airport).

Travel Note

Flight Information

Italy’s two largest airports are Rome Fiumicino (FCO) and Milan Malpensa (MXP). If you’re taking a direct flight from the US, you’ll be landing at one of those two airports. If you’re connecting (either from one of these two airports or from a hub in Europe), you may also arrive at Venice, Florence, Naples, or Bologna. While Milan is closer than Rome, if you’re arriving on the weekend you’ll have ample time to make your way to Bologna from any of these cities, and from Bologna to Villa Giulia.

Travel Note

By Car

We recommend driving to Villa Giulia, as it is an easy hour and 45 minutes from Bologna by car, the vast majority of the ride being by highway. If you plan to drive to the venue, we recommend getting to Bologna by train or plane and renting your car there. Bologna is connected via Italy’s high speed rail system to all major cities and is fairly central. The main train station in Bologna has all major rental chains and is located such that you will not need to drive through the medieval areas of the city. It is also possible to rent a car in Ancona, but it’s less straightforward getting to Ancona in the first place.

Train

Trenitalia

Fano is accessible via limited high speed rail from Milan and more both high speed and standard rail from Bologna. The closest station to the venue is Fano (PU) Statzione, about 3 miles away. The venue is outside of town and up a large hill (not walkable), so a car needs to be taken to the venue. Taxis are available but need to be arranged ahead of time. Uber does not seem to be available in Fano. Car rental in town is limited, as Fano is a small city. More info to come soon around arranging taxis.

FAQs

Question

Where do we stay?

Answer

Accommodations will be provided for all guests from Sept 16-19 (while we have the venue). Accommodations will be split between the venue itself and a B&B or two very close by. More detail on this to come.

Question

How do we get there?

Answer

We think that driving to the venue from Bologna is the easiest way to get there. It's a bit more than an hour and a half (and mostly on the highway) to get there and having a car at the venue will provide you the opportunity to explore the town or head to the beach when you have downtime. It is possible to reach Fano by train from Milan (limited high speed rail to Fano) or Bologna (both high speed or more plentiful standard rail). Once in Fano, a taxi needs to be arranged to get to the venue. If you plan on using the train, please indicate that on your RSVP (and see the below FAQ item regarding arriving by train).

Question

What do I need to drive in Italy?

Answer

Driving in Italy isn't as hard as you think! If you hold a valid license in the USA (or in Taiwan), you simply need to obtain an International Driver's Permit (IDP) in your home country before leaving for Italy. An IDP is simply a translation of your license into a standardized format, which is valid for a year from the date of issuance. There is no test required, simply a $20 or so fee to take your picture. You'll still need to bring your license with you in addition to your IDP. In the US, you can obtain an IDP in 10 min at any AAA location.

Question

I don't want to drive, how can I get to the venue?

Answer

Fano, the closest town to our venue, is accessible by train... but the venue itself is not walkable from the train station. You will need to use a taxi to go the last 15 minutes to the venue. If you plan to arrive this way, PLEASE INDICATE THIS ON THE RSVP. We will pass your contact information on to our planner to help you arrange your taxi. Uber is not available in Fano and taxis are not available to flag from the street, you must pre-arrange.

Question

What do I need to enter Italy?

Answer

You need a valid passport with at least 6 months before expiry at the moment you enter Italy. If your passport is expired, or will expire before May 2025, you should begin the renewal process now.

Question

What should I wear?

Answer

This is a chance to look your Italian best! The dress code for the wedding is cocktail attire. This means suits for uomi (gents) and dresses or elegant separates for donne (ladies). Ladies, please don't wear white (or champagne or ivory or almost-white, you get it) on the day of the wedding. For aperitivi, dinners on other nights, and the winery visit, the dress code is smart casual. During the day, wear what's comfortable for you. Please no screaming eagle America shirts. Screaming Philadelphia Eagles shirts are acceptable. The venue does have a pool and chairs, provided it's warm enough to swim (and it was when we visited in early October!)

Question

Is the ground going to swallow my shoes if I wear heels?

Answer

The wedding ceremony will take place on grass, weather permitting. Fano doesn't get as much rain as the east coast of the US, but I can't guarantee that you'll be fine in stilettos. The cocktail hour and after-dinner dancing will be on a hard floor, while dinner will be on firm gravel.

Question

How's the weather going to be?

Answer

We visited in the first week of October and the weather was fantastic, upper 70s during the day and high 60s at night. We were told that it's been warmer in the last few years, but it could be anywhere from 60s to 80s at the end of September. Fano doesn't receive as much rain as the east coast of the US, but it does rain occasionally.

Question

Should I bring a gift?

Answer

We know that we're asking a lot of your time and wallet in attending this wedding, so your presence is enough of a present for us! If you still feel that you'd like to give something in addition, please do that in the form of a check or Venmo (or give it to us at another time). We don't want to be carrying any significant amount of cash or other bulkier gifts with us for the remainder of the trip.

Question

Will there be wine?

Answer

Yes, of course.

Question

Will there be food?

Answer

Breakfast will be provided for all guests at their hotels. Light lunches and full dinners will be provided at Villa Guilia for all guests.

Question

I have another question, who do I ask?

Answer

Us. You have one of our numbers, feel free to reach out with anything else you need to know!
