We both spent 3 weeks every summer attending the same Ukrainian camp ("tabir") in Ohio ("Pysanyj Kamin"). Adrian is a few years older, and so we were in different groups for the most part, but he swears he remembers Tanya as "cute but quiet". By 2017, both of our paths had brought us to DC. Adrian grew up in the area but had spent his 20s in New York, and decided it was time to return home to teach at his alma mater, Gonzaga. Tanya had been in DC since college but not particularly active in the "Ukrainian scene." Then when a mutual, Ukrainian friend moved to DC and suggested a community ("hromada") happy hour, both Tanya and Adrian decided to go and "re-met." We started talking about working in education and recent/ upcoming travels to Iceland, and the rest is history.
We were thrilled to start our married life on August 1 by taking our vows at St. Nicholas Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral in the presence of our parents, siblings, and local family, and in front of extended family and close friends who joined us virtually. Current circumstances prevented us from celebrating with our full community on August 1, but we look forward to making up for it next year when we can safely come together to mark the occasion!
