Tim proposed on our annual birthday vacation. As many know, and many don’t know, we have the same birthday, Sept 15. When we first began dating we decided instead of a gift exchange it would be more fun to give experiences together. Each year we pick a new place to venture to and do our usual balance of Tracey wanting a relaxing bougie vacation and Tim wanting to be in the wilderness camping. Early in 2023 Tracey’s coworker had breath taking pictures of his vacation kayaking to see Pictured Rocks National Shoreline, so kayaking sounded right up their alley. After a lot of research, a six hour kayak tour was booked for the Saturday after their birthday. Working around that timeline, next on the list was planning hiking. Every online forum said Presque Park was THE place for sunrise and sunset hikes. So, Friday morning they woke up and set out on their hike to find rocks, the theme of the trip. Hiking through the little coves of Presque Park was absolutely unreal. Unfortunately, Tim wanted to propose and a fellow hiker ruined his plans. In true Tracey fashion, she NEEDED Starbucks after this grueling (haha) hike. In true Tim fashion, he wanted to eat. Compromising, they grabbed lunch at a local diner followed by strawberry açía lemonade for birthday drinks at Starbucks. Tracey search for hikes and waterfalls, and alas! Dead River Falls was 10 min away and a moderate hike. Jokes still keep coming, the hike started straight up a gravel hill followed by stairs straight down to a small water fall. Directions on all trails said the hike continues in either direction, so they followed the people in front of them. The hike continued straight up a wall of tree roots to climb. Tracey being a chicken with a hurt foot decided to play it safe and suggested the other direction. So, they set off in the opposite direction. The path continued to get narrower and narrower as they continued until only one foot fit on the path and they were holding onto trees to stay upright. They got to the end and found another small waterfall but there were no tree limbs or rocks to hold a phone, so no selfies were acquired. Tracey was getting nervous and wanted to get back through the trail, but Tim still had an agenda unknown to her. Booking it back across the smallest path, Tim called for Tracey to turn around, she said absolutely not, too close to the edge. Tim asked from behind her if she wanted this life forever and Tracey being the most logical person said “we need to get back to the car before we fall to death” then turned around to Tim holding a ring. Now, Tracey also ruined this poor guy’s plans and told him “if you get your pants dirty or fall down the hill, you cannot get back in my clean car, but yes I want this life of staring down death hiking forever with you”. Tim did tell his family and her family but did not have any help picking a ring. Tracey was absolutely impressed with how good of a job he did and was thoroughly surprised.
