It is safe in touristy/heavily trafficked areas but always be very aware of your surroundings and of your belongings. Always ask the hotel concierge before wandering into any areas to make sure you are not putting yourself in unnecessary risk. That said, the colonial zone is one of the most walkable parts of the city and there is a lot to see and explore!
