Well, we met at work of all places. It was very unexpected in many ways. We have worked together for many years and really didn't think of each other as individuals getting together; but just as coworkers. Gerri did her thing and I did my thing. She was single and I was married at the time with two children. Over the years we did our own thing with our families and friends. Then in 2018 I lost my wife to cancer. It was very hard on my boys and myself. My family, work family and church kept me together during this time in my life. After some time after her death, Gerri and I started to see each other off and on. Gerri is a private person and she didn't want anyone to know that she was seeing me. I understood, so we kept it quiet. It was fun though, going out to have ice cream, going to the movies, having dinner together. I remember shopping one day and both of us having to duck away because she saw someone that works with us. She stopped so fast and darted the other way that would make you think that she was not even there. This happen several times when we were dating. We went on vacation to several places over the years. I think the most memorable one was when we went to Bar Harbor. As usual it rained; but the weather did not hamper our spirits. We decided to do some hiking and we did the Beehive Trail. Little did I know that she was not too fond of heights. Well, this trail was very challenging with sheer drops and iron bars to hold onto. Let's just say when we got to the summit, she was over her fear of heights. When she looked down from the summit, there was a beautiful view of the ocean, beach, and the forest that we hiked through. When I pointed out the beach to her, she was lost for words. That beach was the same beach that we were on prior to our hike and she did not realize that the summit we were on was the exact one she looked at saying "I don't think I would want to be up there." When we were looking up from the beach we saw something moving not realizing it was people up on the summit. That evening when we came back to the hotel from hiking, we had dinner. We wanted to get freshen up. We were going to go out for dessert and have some cheesecake. We almost didn't go but I talked her into it. At the restaurant we ordered our cheesecakes, tea and coffee. It seemed to take awhile for our dessert to come out. When it did, I placed her ring next to her dessert and asked her if she would marry me. She was so shocked that she couldn't say a word and was just staring at the ring. She told me later that she had butterflies and couldn't say or do a thing. The look on her face was priceless. She finally did give me an answer after she composed herself. I told her that I wanted to ask her at the summit when we got there; but I didn't have the ring. I thought about it when we were hiking. She told me that if I did that she would have been afraid to wear the ring or would be afraid of losing it. Having done what I did was very unexpected and that she would always remember it.
