In 2012, Amber and I met at OU in Athens, OH at The Pigskin. While I may not remember most of that evening, I do remember the pretty, smart girl who was so kindly conversing with me even as I started slurring my words. Liquid Courage empowered me to ask Amber for her number and she obliged. But I wouldn't use that number because Amber was a diligent student and I was usually more interested in the social aspects of college. Thankfully, I was still following her on instagram nearly a decade later. Amber posted photos of her and the famous Declan Lucca, which caught my attention. Through some more "research" on social media, she appeared to be single. After a few bevvies one night in January 2022, I made a reminder on my phone to text Amber at noon the next day. When that reminder popped up, I scoffed: "I can't text her out of the blue now, that would be weird." That night my old friend, Liquid Courage, revisited me and I decided that 3 a.m. was the perfect time to send her a message out of the blue. As the kids say, I "slid into her DMs" on instagram even though I still had her phone number from college. I was terrified when she replied immediately because, little did I know, Declan did not like to sleep. I invited Amber to coffee and she was game. Due to the circumstances, Declan joined us for our first date. While I consider this our first date, Amber considered this to be merely an audition. I went on to make her dinner for an afternoon movie date (again, Declan wasn't sleeping) where we watched Rear Window. Soon after, she met up with me and some of my rugby friends at Meister's after one of our matches. Near the end of the night, I felt like I needed to make it clear that I had a crush. I asked Amber, who held the pool table undefeated the entire night, to make a deal with me: if I win, can I have a real date? She agreed. I broke and then, as fate would have it, I made every ball to seal the deal. On our first "real" date, I asked Amber to go hear my favorite author, Neil Gaiman, speak at the Palace Theatre. Even though she did not have a ton of time to read, I learned she liked Viking history & Norse folklore. As a gift for her first Mother's Day, I bought her a copy of Gaiman's Norse Mythology, a collection of short stories - in hopes of it being more agreeable with her schedule. From there, our story was written in the stars. After we decided we had big dumb crushes on each other and moved in together, I knew I wanted to propose. Well, my aim for a surprise engagement in Ireland was foiled by Amber's detective mind and her disdain for surprises. So we started planning everything together, but my ONE surprise for her was getting to pop the question with a ring pop on college green in Athens while "Nobody's Perfect" by J.Cole was playing. After that, we got to share in the joy of surprising our friends and family together. I could have never imagined that an Athens night out at The Pigskin could have led to marrying my best friend and creating our amazing family. We are so excited to celebrate with everyone in July 2024!
Ring Bearer
Don't worry, we know who the real star of the show will be: our smart, sweet, handsome, wild boy. He's shy in front of new people at first, but I am hoping he sees familiar faces at the front and comes running with the rings!
Flower Girl
Just in case Declan is scared about coming down the aisle alone, we have recruited the prettiest flower girl to show him the way. Luna is Spencer's fearless niece and the perfect little girl to shower the aisle with flowers for Amber's entrance. This tiny dancer is well practiced in front of a crowd and loves her cousin-to-be, Declan! You don't want to miss this dynamic duo setting the tone for the happy couple to become the family's newest perfect pair!
Maid of Honor
Jessica is my ride-or-die, A1 from day 1, sister from another mister. We first became friends in the 3rd grade when we were stuck together in after school care while our moms worked late. She tried not to like me at first, but I eventually won her over when I gave her candy and let her go down the slide ahead of me. From there, it's pretty much all she wrote. From getting caught kissing boys in the closet at school to her staying in the dorm with me during my first week at OU when I was nervous about moving away for college to her becoming Declan's Aunt Jessica, she has been with me through the good, the bad, and the ugly. The one who has truly seen it all and has the biggest heart of anyone I know. There's no way I was getting married without her!
Matron of Honor
Every once in a while, someone comes into your life and you're just meant to be friends. Natalee is one of those once-in-a-lifetime friends for me. We met our first week at OU as English majors. While walking home from class we realized we also lived in the same dorm and then we both coincidentally rushed the same sorority. That was the start of a life-long friendship. But the serendipity didn't end at OU! Over a decade later, we are both marrying fellow Bobcats who happened to be in the same fraternity; so Natalee has the special position of knowing both the bride and the groom! Aside from all the happy accidents that have brought us together over the years, Natalee is one of the most caring and thoughtful people I know. There is no limit to the effort she will put into her friendships, and she has supported me through every high and every low over the years despite the miles that separate us. Well, 2024 is no different! I couldn't imagine getting married without her by my side. After we celebrate, Natalee gets to go back to her home in Florida with her husband and their two adorable pups!
Bridesmaid
Emily, my fellow overachiever, has been off becoming a doctor while I was becoming a lawyer. No matter how much distance has come and gone between us or the amount of time that goes by without talking or hanging out, we always pick up right where we left off. What started as a middle school friendship consisting of binge-watching Supernatural nearly every day after school, weekend sleepovers, and making weekly Saturday Stauf’s coffee runs with my mom now looks like a coffee date here, a three-hour FaceTime conversation there, and an occasional get together with old friends. But despite our busy lives, we have always made time for each other and I can always count on her to be there for me when I need her. After a 20-year-long friendship and as the ring bearer’s Godmother, I definitely need her standing by my side on my wedding day!
Bridesmaid
On our first date, Spencer complimented the artwork hanging on the wall at Stauf's Coffee. I instantly bragged about how I knew the artist that painted the piece he was pointing out. Eight months later, I bought a smaller version of that painting for Spencer's 30th birthday, which now hangs proudly in our living room. Haley, my most creative and whimsical friend, was the artist that I was bragging about. Having met in middle school and developing a close-knit bond through high school, we always supported each other's creativity. Seeing as Haley modeled for nearly all my photo shoots in high school, my wedding photos wouldn't be the same without her in them. In addition to being a stellar artist and model, she is one of the most loyal friends, and I am so excited to have her stand by my side while I marry the most loyal man I know! P.S. Don't forget to check out the portrait of our dogs next to our signature wedding cocktails - Haley made that one too :)
Bridesmaid
If law school was a sorority, Sara would be my "big" sister. Don't let the lack of Greek letters fool you, though, she still took me under her wing and claimed me as her "mini" after we met during my first year. What started as her being the third-year teaching assistant for my legal writing class quickly turned into us sharing many similar experiences. I inherited her teaching assistant position when she graduated, we clerked at the same law firm, and we navigated the beginning of our legal careers together. Over the years, our friendship has seen many glasses of wine, plates of pasta, shots of fireball, walks with our dogs, country concerts, and the list goes on. Next up on the list of shared experiences is standing by each other's side on each of our wedding days. I was honored to be a bridesmaid in her wedding last summer, and I cannot wait for her to stand by my side this summer!
Best Man
“Spencer is my big brother, if you couldn’t tell. I’m less hairy than him though. I love him.”
Best Man
“I met Spencer in 1992 and shared a room with him until 2007. From then on, we would have adventures like getting our parents detained in Greece, stopping him from jumping out of the window at the age of 5, and rollerblading down the slide in the snow. Eventually we grew up (kind of), but now we can watch our families grow as Luna, Declan, and Ollie get to make their own adventures…just maybe no rollerblades at Christmas. ; )”
Groomsman
“Spencer and I grew up great neighborhood friends. When he wasn't raiding my fridge for chocolate syrup you could find us playing sports with everyone in the neighborhood; especially football. South side reppin.”
Groomsman
“Spencer has been one of my closest friends for as long as I can remember. From kindergarten to 30, we’ve been classmates, teammates, fraternity brothers, and late night Tenacious D cover bandmates. Spence and the whole Thomaki clan are like family to me and I can’t imagine growing up without them.”
Groomsman
“I’ve been friends with Spencer since middle school despite him never being allowed over to my house. He was very gifted in the art of breaking things.”
Officiant
An old photo seemed appropriate to depict this age-old friendship! Amy and I met long ago in church and we were instantly kindred spirits. No matter how long we go without seeing each other, we always find our way back eventually! After nearly going into ministry herself, I figured it was about time she became ordained. What better time than my wedding? Amy understands my heart and my style, but she also always makes it a point to inquire about Spencer's preferences too. We have had fun catching up and planning with her! From the bible readings to the pronouncement, we are so excited for Amy to help bring our wedding ceremony to life!
Reader
Who better to read for us than a professional poet?! Olivia is Spencer's super talented, younger sister who set out to travel the world as a teacher, but decided becoming a published poet was cooler! Remember the book mentioned in our love story? Olivia has the honor of reading an excerpt from the short story "Before the Beginning, and After" that Amber discovered while reading Gaiman's Norse Mythology. Even though it was early on in the relationship at the time, Amber bookmarked this passage as a possible wedding reading in the event we went the distance. Well, here we are! We are so excited to have Olivia recite this special passage during our ceremony!
