How We Met

Our love story began at Washington State University, where we met towards the end of our sophomore year. I never realized we were in the same ROTC class—mostly because I sat in the front, and he was always in the back. Despite our hectic schedules, we quickly became friends, and over time, our connection deepened, and we began dating. Even though some people doubted us, we always knew what we shared was special. Our relationship continued through challenges and distance after college—Phillip flew off to Italy, while I went to South Korea before returning to Washington. We often get asked how and why we did the distance. It was not easy, but we were committed to making it work. Our love for one another kept us strong!

Our First Date

Phillip and I often joke about our first date. He’s sure it was at Buffalo Wild Wings, but I’m convinced it was at a little breakfast cafe called "Old European" in Pullman, WA. We sat in the booth in comfortable silence for a few moments, and then one of his first questions was, "Do you like cats?" He still swears it’s a valid question, but I’m definitely more of a dog person. It didn’t seem to bother him, though—after all, we don’t have either pet right now, but we love them both! Towards the end of our date, the waitress came over and asked if we were paying together or separate. Phillip said, "Together," so I thought, "Okay, he’s paying." But when the check came, he looked at me and said, "I forgot my wallet." We both laughed, and the moment became one of those funny memories we still joke about today.

The Proposal

November 27, 2023

We were on vacation in Madrid, Spain, and the morning felt like any other day in Spain—full of adventure. After waking up and getting dressed, we headed downstairs to enjoy our breakfast at the hotel. As we ate, we chatted about what to do for the day. Phillip suggested visiting a nearby park, "Parque Del Retiro", and so off we went. After a quick 15-minute train ride, we arrived and began exploring. As we wandered, I noticed a small lake where people were boating. Phillip asked, "Want to go on a boat ride?" and of course I said yes! He paddled us all the way to the center of the lake, where he asked me to close my eyes and hold out my hands (haha). When I opened my eyes, I was completely taken by surprise to see Phillip down on one knee, right there in the boat, asking me to marry him! It was such a happy moment, and I said yes, of course!
