She has an undergraduate degree from Bowling Green State University in Interior Design, with a minor in Art. She furthered her education at the master's level with classes in interior design focusing on design for aging in place at Eastern Michigan University. Mary is the wife of Robert Frost (not the poet) and mother to 3 children, two boys, and a girl. Her daughter, the middle child, who got her started in photography, was born with a congenital heart defect (CHD).

Oberer's Flowers beginning goes back to the 1890s when Carl Oberer, an immigrant from Germany bought a plot of land north of Dayton on Troy Pike and started growing vegetables. He grew lettuce, tomatoes, carrots, and sold them at market in downtown Dayton. This was called "truck gardening" which contrary to common belief has nothing to do with trucks at all.
