House of Broel was built as a story and a half family dwelling in 1850 in the Garden District of New Orleans. In 1884 the family decided they needed room for weddings and parties so they had the house lifted, making it a two and a half story mansion that we use today for events as they did back centuries ago. Since its inception, The Pythian Temple hosted popular performing groups and African-American carnival balls. Laurenia is named after Smith Wendell (S.W.) Green’s wife. She assisted him in running his business, was a member of the NAACP, and was active in the early struggle for civil rights.
