In 1929 The Museum of Modern Art was founded by three women seeking to share their love of modern and contemporary art with the world: Lillie P. Bliss, Mary Quinn Sullivan and Abby Aldrich Rockefeller. Within four months of the Museum's opening, a retail operation was established in the lobby. MoMA's retail operations grew as the Museum grew, establishing the first curatorial department dedicated to Architecture and Design in 1932 and expanding its collection throughout the decades in the celebration of creativity, openness, tolerance, and generosity. The MoMA brand offers an assortment unlike any other. As part of their selection process each design is reviewed with the Museum's curators, and they apply a set of criteria to ensure every product fits their vision of good design. These key filters include the products' relation to MoMA's collection or exhibitions, innovation of materials, function or technology and educational value. Through this process, they actively work to democratize good design at every price point and all purchases go back to support the Museum's collection and programs.

<p>Designed for MoMA by Masami Takahashi and originally created for use at the popular Sugakiya ramen noodle restaurant chain in Japan, these combination spoon and forks easily twist noodles and ladle soup. They were designed to eliminate waste created by disposable chopsticks. The Ramen Spoon/Fork Set reflects the Museum's interest in flatware, as well as Japanese design from the modern era, many examples of which are featured in the Museum's collection and are regularly displayed in the Museum's Design Galleries.</p>
