Start your morning with a visit from the outside to Ba Dinh square, center of the Ho Chi Minh complex (including the Mausoleum, Ho Chi Minh museum, the One-Pillar Pagoda and the Presidential Palace). Located about 2 kilometers to the west of Sword Lake, Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum holds special meaning for Vietnamese and inside the Soviet-inspired building, there lies the embalmed body of Ho Chi Minh - often known as “the father of the nation”, who passed away in 1969. After that, continue to visit the Temple of Literature (Van Mieu in Vietnamese), situated in the place once known as the first university of Vietnam. Built in 1070 by Emperor Ly Thanh Tong, the university was first opened for princes and mandarins exclusively. Inside, you will find 82 of the original 116 stelae engraving the names of the winners from doctorate competitions. Outside, with its ancient courtyards, altars and roofs, Van Mieu is a very fine example of Vietnamese architecture.
