Delos was identified as a sacred place for a thousand years before it was named the birthplace of the gods Apollo and Artemis. Home to settlements and cultic sites for millennia in antiquity, Delos and its ruins are today an open air museum.

After its conquest and during its four centuries of rule, the Republic of Venice constructed many forts in the Aegean isles, including the impeccable sea fort Rocca A Mare (pictured) in Heraklion, Crete.
